What Are Prod Keys?
Prod keys (production keys) are cryptographic decryption keys extracted from a Nintendo Switch console. These keys are essential for emulators to decrypt and play encrypted Nintendo Switch games. Without the correct prod.keys file, no emulator can interpret or run the encrypted game data, rendering it completely unusable.
The prod.keys file contains master keys, derived keys, and title key area keys that the emulator uses to decrypt NSP, XCI, and other Nintendo Switch file formats. Each firmware version introduces new key generations, which is why keeping prod keys updated is critical for compatibility with newer games.
Emulators such as Suyu, Ryujinx, Yuzu, Eden, Citron, and Sudachi all require prod keys. While the underlying keys are the same across emulators, each expects the file in a specific directory location on your system.
What Are Title Keys?
While prod keys contain the master cryptographic material needed to decrypt the Nintendo Switch encryption layer, title keys are per-game encryption keys. Some emulators require a separate title.keys file alongside prod.keys to play certain digital eShop titles.
In most modern emulator builds, title keys are embedded within the prod.keys file itself or derived from the master keys it contains. However, having both files ensures maximum compatibility across all games, DLC, and updates.

FAQ
Prod keys (production keys) are cryptographic decryption keys extracted from a Nintendo Switch console. Emulators like Suyu, Ryujinx, Yuzu, and Eden use them to decrypt and run encrypted Nintendo Switch game files (NSP, XCI), firmware, updates, and DLC content. Without valid prod keys, no Nintendo Switch emulator can boot commercial games.
Yes. The underlying encryption keys are the same across all Nintendo Switch emulators. The prod.keys file works universally — you do not need separate keys per emulator. However, each emulator expects the file in a different folder location. See the install paths below each download table tab.
Prod keys are master and derived cryptographic keys that allow the emulator to decrypt the key areas within game files. Title keys are per-game encryption keys stored in a separate title.keys file. In most cases, title keys are embedded within or derived from the prod.keys file. Some digital games tied to a Nintendo account may require both files.
Yes. Prod keys and firmware serve different functions — both are required. Prod keys decrypt game files so the emulator can read them. Firmware provides the Nintendo Switch operating system services (audio, input, file system) that games call at runtime. Without firmware, games may decrypt but crash immediately.
Place the prod.keys file in the emulator's keys directory. For Suyu: %APPDATA%/suyu/keys/. For Ryujinx: %APPDATA%/Ryujinx/system/. For Yuzu: %APPDATA%/yuzu/keys/. For Eden: %APPDATA%/eden/keys/. The file must be named exactly prod.keys with no additional extensions. Restart the emulator after installing.
Outdated prod keys cannot decrypt content encrypted by newer firmware versions. Common errors include "Missing prod.keys," "Failed to decrypt NCA," and games failing to boot or showing black screens. Always keep your prod keys updated to the latest firmware version for broadest compatibility.
Prod keys must be extracted from a Nintendo Switch console you own. Downloading shared prod.keys files from third-party sources operates in a legal gray area. We recommend using keys dumped from your own hardware via tools like Lockpick_RCM.
